Elco High School student thrown from vehicle
Two students hospitalized but conscious after single-vehicle crash.
Two Elco High School students were hospitalized Monday afternoon after a single-vehicle crash in Millcreek Township, state police said.
Both were conscious after the crash, said Trooper Manuel Cabrera Maldonado.
A Ford F-350 with an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in the back of the pickup truck was headed south near 209 N. Sheridan Road when the 17-year-old male driver from Newmanstown lost control, crossed over the north lane of traffic and drove over an embankment into a muddy field, Cabrera Maldonado said. Emergency crews were first dispatched at 2:34 p.m.
The driver was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the field. He was transported by helicopter to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Cabrera Maldonado said.
The 16-year old male passenger from Schaefferstown was not ejected from the vehicle and was taken by ambulance to Hershey Medical Center. Both the driver and the passenger suffered serious injuries, including fractured bones, but the injuries do not appear life-threatening, Cabrera Maldonado said.
The names of the driver and passenger were not released because they are juveniles, but the trooper did identify them as Elco students. Neither was wearing a seat belt, Cabrera Maldonado said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
In addition to state police, Neptune and Newmanstown fire companies; First Aid and Safety Patrol; Myerstown, Newmanstown, and Schaefferstown ambulances, and fire police were called to the scene.
The Ford F-350 sustained severe damage and was towed from the scene. The driver was cited with driving-at-a-safe-speed and restraint violations, police said.
